Google Lifting the CBD Advertising Ban ... Sorta

Have you ever wondered why you never see CBD ads online? That’s because a few years back, Google banned the advertising of particular CBD and hemp products. However, that’s all about to change. Thanks to an announcement that the internet titan made at the end of December, it will allow advertising in certain states and territories. Here’s a breakdown of the new Google guidelines.
The Previous Ban
Under the previous ban, Google listed CBD under its unapproved products list. At the time, Google executives felt that CBD was untested and didn’t know much about it. It also didn’t help that the FDA hadn’t regulated the products. Therefore, CBD was in a gray area, where it was becoming popular but still relatively mysterious.
Lifting the Ban
With the lifting of the ban, Google will allow CBD advertising starting in January in Colorado, Puerto Rico, and California. In order to qualify, the product must be an FDA-approved pharmaceutical or be hemp-derived with less than 0.3% THC. According to Marijuana Moment, Google said, “All ads promoting other CBD-based products, including supplements, food additives, and inhalants, continue to be disallowed.”
Google did not explain why only a couple of states and Puerto Rico are part of the new policy. The change is curious since hemp and hemp-derived substances, notably CBD, are legal at the federal level thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill.
The Process
Additionally, Google will work with, LegitScript, a company that will certify CBD products for eligibility. Companies will also be able to submit their applications for inclusion. These businesses will have to provide samples for testing to ensure they’re under the legal THC limit. Afterward, they must submit “a third-party Certificate of Analysis” to Google.
From there, Google will certify the company before it’s allowed to advertise. Beginning on January 20, CBD companies can start requesting certification from Google.
The Future
Though the new policy change only affects three locations, many hope that Google will expand to the rest of the country. Since CBD continues to grow in popularity and more people are comfortable with it, there’s more of a push to make it mainstream.
