New Bill Introduced to Legalize CBD Supplements

Great news for all you CBD lovers—Congress recently introduced a bill to legalize CBD supplements. Under the latest legislation, CBD products without THC would be subjected to the same FDA regulations as other similar products. What does this mean for consumers? You get products that are safer since they face the most rigorous standards. The bill would also standardize the industry, a plus for both consumers and brands.
Hemp Consumer Protection & Market Stabilization Act
Since the FDA has been slow to make a final call on CBD and where it stands, Congress decided to step up to the plate. According to Natural Product Insider, the bill called the Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act of 2021 has bipartisan support. Under the bill, hemp would be “subject to all the other regulations as for any other dietary supplement.” This means that CBD products would fall under new dietary ingredient filings, labeling and marketing provisions, and Good Manufacturing Practices.
Downfalls
Though the bill could be a big win for the CBD industry, there are some drawbacks. Some believe that the pressure to comply with the new dietary ingredient filings could force some brands out of the marketplace. As a result, there would be fewer brands for consumers to choose from. With fewer choices, prices could also increase. Yes, there’s always a drawback or two.
Uncertainty Looms
Even though several congress members support the bill, some prefer to take a hands-off approach. Instead, they want the FDA to handle the matter and make the final decision. Industry leaders want legislators to handle the situation sooner rather than later. How things turn out remains to be seen.
